Rome, Giovy Bed and Breakfast.
We stayed for six nights at this B&B in June 2005 and thoroughly enjoyed our time there. We had booked it via the Internet and the feedback and response from the owner, Giovanna (Joanna), was immediate. We were after a reasonably budget priced place to stay that was convenient to all the major tourist and transport locations. The B&B Giovy certainly met our expectations, and indeed exceeded them in many ways.
It is only a five minute walk from the main Rome Termini railway station, and the Metro/bus stops, from where all of Rome is then accessible. In fact, most of the major attractions can easily be reached within a thirty minute slow stroll. In the immediate vicinity there are restaurants, laundrettes, shops of all kinds, and a small supermarket, which we found very convenient.
From the street the B&B doesn’t look fantastic, but don’t be put off by first appearances. The neighbourhood is safe and we certainly never had any problems even walking after dark, but do be aware of pickpockets - they operate all over the city. Once you pass through the attractive outer courtyard with its fountain and gardens you make your way to the first floor and the B&B. There is a central corridor with guest rooms off to the left and right and the breakfast room is on the right just as you enter. The breakfast room is fairly compact and has three tables and the serving counter, but as breakfast is from eight till ten you will always find enough room, in fact we never encountered more than two occupied tables at any one time. The breakfast itself is continental with as much tea/coffee as you want and there is definitely more than enough to eat, or at least we thought so.
Our accommodation comprised of a large room and en-suit with shower. As there were three of us staying we had both a double and single beds and there was still plenty of room to move around. There was a large wardrobe, a dressing table with huge mirror above, two bedside cabinets, fridge, hair dryer, air conditioning unit and colour TV. The new double glazed window overlooked the courtyard below and was also fitted with adjustable shutters. The room itself, indeed the whole of Giovy B&B is clean and tastefully decorated, in addition, the room is serviced daily and there are plenty of electric wall sockets for kettles, hair dryers etc (there isn’t a kettle provided, you have to supply your own if you want one).
While we were there we met several of the other guests most of whom were couples, the same as us who were after a nice safe time in Rome. We found the security to be first rate – you need four separate keys to get from the street to your room! If you are really concerned, the owner will let you use the safe, but we didn’t bother and had no problems whatsoever. Which brings us to the main feature of this B&B – the owner, Joanna. She (and her husband) are on the go all the time, nothing is too much trouble for her and she goes to great lengths to make your stay as pleasant and trouble free as possible. From the moment we arrived she provided us with maps and suggestions as to what to do and things to avoid, all without being intrusive. In fact she is more of a friend than a B&B host and this is something most of the other guests here have also commented on.
In conclusion, if you are after a nice, safe clean base to stay in while you explore Rome, that is not going to break the bank, then this is an ideal spot. It suited us just fine and we would certainly recommend it to like minded people, and will definitely stay here again.
