We are just back from a break in Rome and stayed at the Grand Palazzo Carpegna for four nights. The hotel building itself is very impressive, particularly when approached by night as the trees on the driveway leading up to the entrance are lit up and the building itself is bright and inviting.
We arrived late at night (after midnight) and were quickly allocated our room. The room itself was fine, not overly large but adequate to our needs. It was very clean and the bathroom was also immaculate. The room had the usual fittings, television with the usual TV stations, including (in English) CNN, BBC World, Eurosport and a SKY Cinema channel which showed some films in English on an alternating basis), hairdryer, etc. It was classed as a superior room which meant that it had tea/coffee making facilities, bathrobe, free internet facilities in the lobby. It had Air Conditioning and we had difficulties with the AC one night - it was not working and when we notified Reception Staff the following morning, the problem had been rectified when we returned to the hotel.
The location, as has been mentioned by previous reviewers is somewhat distant from the centre of city but this is really only a problem in terms of arriving from the airport. We flew into Ciampino at 11.45pm and we were charged € 70 by an official taxi to go to the hotel. If we had arrived earlier in the day, we could have simply got the bus to Termini Station and taken the Metro out to the hotel or alternatively, I understand that there is a Cotral bus which would have taken us to Anagnini Metro Station and we could have purchased a Metro Ticket all the way directly to Cornelia Station (which is the nearest station to the hotel). Another matter to beware of is - when you arrive at Cornelia Station, be sure to exit from the station at the Via Aurelia side. We came out the wrong side on one occasion and we were wandering around aimlessly for a while before we found the way back to the hotel. The number of different exits from the stations can be confusing when you are not familiar with them. The metro is very similar to those in many other cities and is very efficient. It cost us 4 for a day ticket and it takes about 15 minutes to get into the centre of the city. We never had to wait more than 3 minutes for the train and usually it came almost immediately. The Metro closes down for the night at 11.30 pm.
Breakfast is served from 6.30 to 10 am. It consisted of cereals, fruit, breads, pastries, preserves, cheese, ham and a hot option of bacon, sausage and eggs. There was a choice of teas, coffee and hot chocolate. There was plenty to set you up for the day.
We loved Rome itself and felt that there was something to look at around almost every corner. It was quite hot as we were there in July. If you plan on visiting St. Peter's Basilica, make sure that you have adequate clothing as they are very strict about visitors being adequately dressed. No shorts or vest tops etc. Shoulders must be covered. We did see people being turned away.
One small comment I would make is that I asked one of the reception staff where the Church was on the grounds (I understand that there is a non-functioning church with seating for 600 people somewhere within the hotel grounds) but she knew nothing about it. My husband asked another staff reception member something another day and again, he knew nothing about it. Overall though, I would recommend this hotel and would like to return there some day.
