My mother and I stayed at the Capo D'Africa for 7 nights this June and were thrilled with our experience. The rooms were nicely sized and comfortable; the style was modern. Air-conditioning--thought not of the freezer variety found in America--was adequate and was quite refreshing after a long day of walking in the very hot sun! Breakfasts were amazing--such a variety of food and such a friendly, hard-working staff. The quiet rooftop terrace was a treat; it was fun to call down to the bar for drinks and be able to enjoy them and a view of the city at the same time. We had dinner one night in the lobby bar; while expensive, it was a great people-watching opportunity and the bartender was sooooo friendly--and made a point of speaking with us a few mornings later when he was working in the breakfast room.
The location was wonderful. Yes, it was a walk, taxi or metro ride to get to many places, but how can you beat having the Colliseum only 3 blocks away? Every morning I walked to the Colliseum and back after breakfast; every morning I was awed by it. The neighborhood is quiet and relaxed; there are markets, restaurants and gelateria nearby.
Out of curiousity, my mother and I did check out the Radisson SAS--Es hotel near the Termini. We LOVED the style of the hotel--very modern and chic but decided that the neighborhood didn't have the same appeal. We missed the Colliseum, the area didn't feel as friendly or comfortable, and it was noisy.
As a hotel, the Capo D'Africa "works" as a great place to stay. What struck as most, was that EVERYONE who worked there seemed to enjoy working there and was proud of the place. The genuine smiles and friendly greetings we received throughout the day certainly added to our experience.
