Domus Aurea was one of those great tours if you are into seeing the "real" Rome. It is still being excavated as well, so you get the sense that you are seeing history unfold...however, it's not a museum, so if you go expecting to see restored art and statues, you'll be disappointed.
Domus Aurea is essentially a "cave". The palace that was once "The Golden House of Nero" was buried by later Emperor's to avoid the reminder of the excess of earlier rulers. As of 3/07, some of the larger interior rooms have been excavated, and if you use your imagination you can imagine the scale of the palace's one-time splendor.
You will also get a chance to climb up some of the scaffolding (easily accessible via short stairwells, most people should have no trouble with them) and view the ceiling frescoes in close up detail.
A note of caution, you will want to dress somewhat warmly as you will be going underground and it did get quite cool. You will also be required to wear a hard hat. The entrance to Domus Aurea can be easy to miss as well, as there probably won't be any lines since the tour is by reservation only.
