I've just returned from my first trip to Italy with the first 2 nights in Rome at the Hotel San Francesco. This is very much a boutique hotel--filled with many artistic touches throughout the building. The rooftop terrace is very cool, and yes(as noted in a previous review) the wine is kind of expensive and the glasses were not as full as I wished. But the atmosphere was first rate and I felt like it was worth the price (and you didn't have to buy anything to enjoy the view either.) As for the room, it really is very small--maybe about 11' square. The bathroom made the room manageable as it was very light, pleasant and actually on the big side. But I did feel a bit cramped and it was difficult living out of a suitcase in such a small space. Of course, this is not all that important when you spend most of your time out of the room anyway. We enjoyed Trastevere and found it easy enough to walk everywhere we wanted to go--the Vatican, and all the historical sites across the river. After a long day of sightseeing, it was nice to be able to walk just 3-4 blocks to reasonably priced, authentic restaurants. We found the staff to be helpful and efficient. The breakfast buffet included some hot items as well as the more typical breads, cakes, and fruit and in the end was our favorite hotel breakfast menu. Overall, the Hotel San Francesco is an excellent value and I would definitely stay there again.
