I've just returned from my first trip to Italy with the first 2 nights in Rome at the Hotel San Francesco. This is very much a boutique hotel--filled with many artistic touches throughout the building. The rooftop terrace is very cool, and yes(as noted in a previous review) the wine is kind of expensive and the glasses were not as full as I wished. But the atmosphere was first rate and I felt like it was worth the price (and you didn't have to buy anything to enjoy the view either.) As for the room, it really is very small--maybe about 11' square. The bathroom made the room manageable as it was very light, pleasant and actually on the big side. But I did feel a bit cramped and it was difficult living out of a suitcase in such a small space. Of course, this is not all that important when you spend most of your time out of the room anyway. We enjoyed Trastevere and found it easy enough to walk everywhere we wanted to go--the Vatican, and all the historical sites across the river. After a long day of sightseeing, it was nice to be able to walk just 3-4 blocks to reasonably priced, authentic restaurants. We found the staff to be helpful and efficient. The breakfast buffet included some hot items as well as the more typical breads, cakes, and fruit and in the end was our favorite hotel breakfast menu. Overall, the Hotel San Francesco is an excellent value and I would definitely stay there again.

We very much enjoyed our week long stay at the Hotel San Francesco in Trastevere. The room was small, but it was also quiet and relatively inexpensive by Roman standards. The breakfast was wonderful and the rooftop bar was a lovely place to have a drink in the afternoon. Trastevere is a fun place to stay with numerous great restaurants just down the block. I was particularly impressed with the staff, especially Daniele who helped us with several difficulties before we even arrived. We would be happy to stay at this hotel again.

We enjoyed our 6 nights at Hotel San Francesco very much. There are many quaint little restaurants within walking distance, and it was easy to access public transportation to get to anywhere we wanted to go in Rome. Our room was very comfortable, and the bathroom was spotless and quite large. All the staff (front desk, breakfast servers, etc.) were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast buffet was outstanding, and the breakfast room looked out onto a pleasant little courtyard. The rooftop bar was a great place to relax and have a drink and watch the sunset at the end of a busy day of sightseeing. The free internet access made it easy for us to keep in touch with family back home. All in all, our first visit to Rome was wonderful and having the Hotel San Francesco as our "home away from home" made it even more pleasant. Grazie to everyone at the hotel!

Perfect location in a quiet square off the Viale Trastevere, the only sound was the chiming of the local church bell. Room was small but perfectly adequate and very clean, nice large bathroom. Breakfast was lovely, great choice of fruits, yoghurt, cereals, bread, ham, cheese, cakes, pastries and even bacon and eggs in the hot cabinet. We walked to all of the main sites and loved being so close to the river and its bridges and little markets. Loved coming back at night to sample yet another authentic and reasonable Trastevere restaurant with nice friendly staff and good service.

So glad we were not staying in a big anonymous hotel in a busy, noisy area. Very relaxing to come back and sit in the cool lobby with a coffee at the end of a hard day's sight-seeing.
Only gripe - lovely roof terrace with fantastic views which we would have visited every night except for the measly (couple of mouthfuls) of not very good wine that we paid 6 Euros a glass for (average price of good bottle of wine was 14 Euros in restaurants). Smallest, most expensive glass of wine I have ever had.

What a delight! Of all the hotels on our trip, this was absolutely the best. Astounding low price for great location, services, and air conditioned accommodation with spectacular bathroom. Our beautiful room overlooked the monestary and we loved watching the old friar fall asleep under the oilve tree in his garden surrounded by birds and chickens. Incredibly quiet, a real plus in Rome. A complimentary computer with internet just to the side of the lobby. Daily papers from around the world. Delicious breakfast. I cannot praise enough the service at all levels. A purely delightful Roman neighborhood setting. During the day, we were two short blocks from typical shopping and markets. I had to have money wired, and there was a quick & easy Western Union just two blocks away amid great lunch deli's and local shopping. A short walk to travel agency for train tickets. In the evening some of the best dining in Rome nearby. Rome's hippest young artistic area at nearby Santa Maria just 15 min. walk. The front desk was very helpful with restaurant recommends and taxi's. For the money, one of the very best hotels in Rome, small enough to feel like a B&B, large enough to feel like a special luxury hotel.
