We were very surprised that anyone had positive things to say about this hotel. We stayed for four days this past month and were very unhappy with the hotel. The location was perfect and the staff very friendly but the hotel definately was not a four star hotel, even by European standards. The rooms were claustrophobically small and very "old and worn" looking. The whole hotel is in desperate need of an upgrade and "re-do". The airconditioning must have been broken and the windows were so grimy, it was impossible to see through them.clearly . We would have checked out but at this point, but we were stuck with the hotel. We are very sorry we didn't choose one of the Boscolo hotels close by.

The Sofitel Villa Borghese is simply the best boutique Hotel in the centre of Rome. The staff is incredibly friendly and the location is perfect - 5 minutes to the Spanish Steps but also only 5 minutes away from the “tourist inferno”.

The roof bar is very hip with an unbeatable view of the whole city of Rome including the beautiful Villa Borghese (next to the hotel) and The Vatican (in the distance).

Our room had three large windows and the two of them had the same stunning view of Rome as on the roof top.

The Villa Borghese is perfect for running in the morning. It’s a little bit like running in Central Park (NYC) – just smaller.

We will definitely be back – and we will definitely stay at The Sofitel Villa Borghese again.

One last tip: Some people told us to take the train from the airport (Fiumicino) to the Termini Station in the centre of Rome. Our advice is: DON’T!! Ask the hotel to get you a limo – it will cost you (only) about 10 euro more than taking that awful train and it will save you about two hours of transportation (each way).

We have now stayed at the Sofitel in Rome on two separate vacations (October 2008 and January 2009), and we will return as many times as our coins in the Trevi Fountain allow. The hotel is absolutely first-class, especially by European standards that we have presumed by using Tripadvisor. We have always felt extremely safe and comfortable staying there with our daughter (6 months on the first trip, 10 months on the second). Its location is ideal- on a very quiet and safe street near Villa Borghese but also within walking distance from everything else you go to Rome to see! Our rooms were very spacious (the room in January was actually big) with extremely comfortable beds under plush white linens, a chaise, table and chairs, desk, TV with internet access, refrigerator, hidden safe, plenty of storage, central heat/air, and luxurious draperies on large, fully opening windows. The staff may be the best asset of this hotel- extremely friendly and helpful with any need you have. The front desk called several local restaurants searching for one serving osso bucco for my husband, they delivered and set up our baby bed complete with a toiletry/slipper package for our daughter, and they arranged a private car from the hotel for our 5 AM trip to the airport to return home- less expensive than a taxi! The Sofitel feels like our home in Rome, and it is because of these very special people whose faces are like those of old friends. You cannot imagine how wonderful and loved we felt when we returned in January and Ezio recognized us (from our October trip) through the window of the taxicab and quickly opened the door, greeted us warmly, and took our baby girl in his arms! He was genuinely happy to see us again, as we were him. He was an instrumental part of BOTH of our visits to Rome with his perfect directions, travel tips, tourist hints, and locations we needed; on a particularly gray January day he even insisted we take his umbrella out with us. We hope to see him many more times- he is the best! This hotel is a beautiful place, inside and out, from the decorations on the walls to the hearts of its employees. Do not miss this wonderful place! If you are looking for a place to retreat and relax after an amazing and fascinating day exploring Rome, do not miss the Sofitel and its rooftop bar. We spent some very nice time up there on gorgeous October nights- incredible view of the city. There is a little restaurant one block away called il Piccolo Mondo that is also a must; we went twice on each trip, and that's saying a lot if a couple of foodies repeat a dining experience in a city with so many options! I will upload pictures later.

Had 2 days in Rome to recover from the long flight from Australia before travelling on. Prime importance was a very quiet room and good bed and no hassles from hotel staff. The rooms are soundproof and very luxurious, the bed was heaven and the location for sightseeing was excellent being close to the Spanish steps, Trevi fountain and a metro station. The food service in the hotel was ridiculously expensive but a breakfast bar just across the street had a great menu and the best coffee in the world. The only exception was a splurge to have drinks (served with nice canapes) on the rooftop at sunset with a truly magnificent view of Rome. First class hotel.

My husband and I couldn't have been happier. The hotel was lovely, the staff was friendly, attentive and always available when we wanted candid advice/suggestions. I did take a previous poster's advice and asked for a nice view of the gardens, which also provided a view of Vatican City (stunning)!
