Hello,

Just stayed at this hotel for three days in October. We were upgraded to a superior room looking out at the Santa Maria church - lucky for us. This had advantage of balcony - not that we used it other than for a photo opportunity. Room was excellent - a bit heavy on the chintz bedspread! But really high quality furnishings. Bed was a bit hard, but overall, I have no complaints about the hotel.

TV in room with mainly foreign channels - BBC world & odd English programme on foreign MTV channel. If you sad like me & like TV, it is worth considering taking a portable DVD player for those moments when you are not eating / sight seeing.

Lovely breakfast on roof terrace - fantastic viewing area.

Weather was lovely! About 75 to 80 degrees farenheit at hottest point. But cooler at night - long sleeves weather. Not sure if this is representative though. We took an umbrella each, but did not need it.

I do understand what people meant by the area now - the termini area is a bit rough. But the hotel is well out of this. It is very convenient if you are getting dropped off by Terravision. Do not worry about the location it is ideal for sights & seemed safe enough, except for the lunatics on mopeds - they do not know what a stop sign means. You take your life in your hands everytime you cross the road in Rome!

The hotel is near a tube if you are feeling lazy. We caught the tube to the Vatican as it seemed a bit far & with all the walking you do when you get there. I would recomment very comfortable shoes!! I cannot emphasis this highly enough. The Santa Maria church is lovely & right infront of the hotel.

Good choice of restaurants in nearby vicinity - mainly pizza & pasta (but then you are in Italy!).

Sights of Rome were awesome. Loved them all. We were told to get to the Vatican museum early, which we did (9am) & queue was still heaving. I have never seen a queue like it (around 1/2 mile & five+ people deep) - no joke. So we went into St. Peters for 1 hour or so & after this, the queue to Vatican museum had vanished! Beware people offering to get you in with no queue for 40 or so euros, as the queue disappears later (it is only 12 euros to get in).

Personally I found the colleseum disappointing inside & expensive considering (10 euros each), but I heard other people loved it & said it was the highlight - so maybe you should ignore me. Have a look in a guidebook at a picture of what is inside - if this appeals to you go in, if not save your money - I thought it was much more impressive on the outside.

We had no incidents of theft during our visit, but personal security is of upmost importance in Rome, as I have heard loads of bad reports about this sort of thing.

In summary, great hotel - it deserves to be in trip advisor top twenty hotels in Rome & I think is an ideal choice for a stay. Hotel is a four star & I would not argue with this. Superb location & fantastic sight seeing.

Hope this helps.

Ps. Incidentally we were looking for a supermarket & had trouble finding one - they don't seem very common in Rome for some unknown reason - perhaps we were oblivious to them! Anyway, there is one on the opposite side of the road next to the department store (down some stairs) - obvious really.

I have just returned from the Golden Mecenate Palace hotel in Rome where i stayed for four nights with my boyfriend. I was iniatially worried as i had seen a few bad reviews and i was just anxious to get what i paid for. I needent have worried, the hotel was fab. Our room was at the front of the hotel which faced out to the magnificent Maria Magigorie church. We found the hotel was situated well as we were travelling every day to different sites. The train station(Termini)was about 5 minutes away which we found great, travelled by metro mostly everywhere which is easy to use and v.cheap. Didnt have many dealing with the front desk at the hotel but we found they seemed to push taxis on us an awfull lot when all we wanted was info on trains or metro. Better off heading to the Termini and getting info and maps on destinations around the city and transport to airports.(alot cheaper)Had alot of problems with taxi drivers ripping us off by taking the scenic route everywhere.
The Housekeeping and breakfast staff were unbelievably helpfull and will go to the ends of the earth to please you and make your stay as enjoyable as possible.
I would definatly recommend to stay in this hotel to anybody and will probably return to stay in the furure.

My wife and I married in Italy in 2004 and following our stay in Sorrento and prior to our trip to Florence, the second leg of our honeymoon was spent in the Eternal City. Paramount to the enjoyment of our honeymoon was good quality accomodation and the Mecenate Palace did not disappoint.
We found the excellent staff to be pleasant and attentive and our superior suite ,which boasted breath taking views of the Santa Maria Maggiore was beautiful and spotless. The roof terrace was a tremendous setting for breakfast and offered a delightful array of breakfast dishes and an excellent view, again of the aforementioned bassilica. The hotel bar which had superb chianti was relaxing and the actual location of the hotel was convenient to many of the essentials I.e. The Roma termini, the pick up point for the open top bus tour and many of the 'tourist traps' I.e. Collesseum, which in turn lead to the Piazza Venezia, Fontana di Trevi, Pantheon et al.

We enjoyed our hotel and Rome so much that we have since been back only returning from our weekend break on 23/10/04.

We really enjoyed our stay at this hotel. The staff were friendly and helpful.

I was a bit concerned when on arrival we were led back out into the street into another building a couple of doors down, especially in view of what one reviewer had written about this.

Needn't have worried and I guess it all comes down to personal taste. It led to a quiet courtyard. The room itself had modern furnishings but in my view very tasteful and the room was a very good size, clean AND the air conditioning worked! It was also quiet.

As others have commented, the breakfasts were fine rather than luxury and with great views from the terrace area.

Given the excellent, service, room and location (especially for the station) we will certainly put this hotel at the top of our list for a return visit to Rome.

Romantic 5 day trip to Rome - very nice hotel. Would say rooms more compact than small but fitted us perfectly. Clean, friendly with an amazing roof top view for light snack/coffee in the evening times to rest those feet. Tourist bus starts from less than 1min around the corner.

Only reservation is that this hotel is on the Esqueline Hill, and yes, you have to walk up that hill to reach your hotel at the end of an evening. However all this requires only 15 mins walk give or take your pace. Still a nice stroll home @ night. You are not in the 'centre' of Rome per se, so you do have to make journey to get to anything.

Make sure you give a day to visit the Roman Forum - it's amazing with a monstrous amount of history attached - don't rush it!! A guide is helpful however and there are a few mentioned on this site which is where we got ours. The group we used were very helpful and would use again.

That said, we walked most of the time, which was fantastic. If you want something romantic - eat at any of the Restaurants at the Pantheon! Wow! Also buy the Tourist bus ticket - it lasts 24 hours and you can use that to get to the most useful spots each day if necessary!

Would definately use this hotel again.
