The Starhotels Michelangelo is an excellently located hotel if you're looking to spend time in Vatican City. It is about a 5 minute walk to St. Peter's Square, and appx 10 to 15 minutes to the entrance to the Vatican Museum.

The hotel itself was pretty nice. The staff was very friendly (I loved waking up and seeing the cleaning staff stop and say "Buongiorno!" to me every morning) and were able to converse in English. I had a ground floor room which meant traffic was somewhat noisy, and since the floors are wood I could hear the lady above me walk around in her high heels at night. There was a breakfast provided, but I'm not much of a breakfast person; from what I could see and smell though it looked great.

There is a small grocer next door to the hotel where you can purchase snacks and drinks. It is also about a block away from some restaurants including a good gelato stand.

I'd say the only negative of this hotel was that if you wanted to see the major Roman sites (Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, etc.) it's a pretty healthy walk to the nearest subway station.

We stayed in Rome for six nights. Although the hotel would not allow us to eat their breakfast buffet the morning we arrived, it allowed us to explore the local eatries around the hotel. As soon as you walk out the front door, you can see St. Peter's dome. We stayed on the first floor. There was not alot of traffic in the front of the hotel, so it was not too bad. The bed was a little hard. The floors were hardwood, just beautiful. The room size was plenty. The bathroom was excellent. However, a safe was not located in the room; it was at the front desk. The breakfast buffet is good, nice variety. The staff is helpful and professional. They do have an interest that you have to pay for, it is not a bad rate. There are many great little cafes around the hotel. We tried a different one each night. While we were in Rome, the taxi drivers decided to go on strike for one day. The hotel helped us to make other transportation arrangements for our sight seeing activities: the bus, which was actually quite nice. The taxis are not expensive. There is an ATM nearby. Also, a great wine shop is across the street. The guy running it is very knowledgable and made some great suggestions.

Just returned from a Criuse after first staying in Rome at the Michelangelo.I was concerned by some of the reviews I read although more recent ones expressed satisfaction.
I would stay there again for the location next to the Vatican was teriifiic, the hotel employees were helpful, the breakfast was plentiful .Local eateries were good and not expensive. The local restaurant employees were very gracoius even though there was a language problem at times
The room was clean, and large enough for 2 of us.The bathroom was also clean and in good repair. It was warm and we could regulate the room temp.
We felt very secure although every where including on the tours you are cautioned agaist pickpockets.
We felt safe there and would recommend it for a good location with access to transportation either by bus tours, taxis or local transportation.

“can't get much closer to the vatican”

Starhotels Michelangelo

We stayed at this hotel towards the end of our tour of italy. It was so close to the vatican, as soon as you exit the hotel and step out into the street, you can see it! The daily breakfast was good, consisting of yogurts, fruit, eggs, bacon, croissants, juice, coffee, and tea.

Our room was nice, always clean, complete with tasty candies left on our pillow! The TV has about 15 channels, and they did have CNN. (many of our other accomodations did not have one american TV channel).

Overall, a nice hotel, and so convenient to the vatican, especially if you are trying to tour the city in only a few days. the walk is so short, you can do some touring in the morning, stop back at the hotel for a quick shower or nap, and return for more sightseeing!
