The Hassler has an old world feel to it - elegant, sedate, filled with antiques and heavy fabrics. The service is a bit stand offish - but nothing that an introductory tip doesn't cure. The housekeeping excellent, room service and maintenance fast and efficient, front desk very accommodating. The breakfast buffet on the main floor courtyard has enough selection of fruits, pastries, scrambled eggs and bacon, fresh juices and excellent cappucino to start the day quickly and sufficiently.
The location at the top of the Spanish Steps is what I would say is the best part of the hotel. Although our suite did not have a view, the restaurant does, as does a small outdoor patio on the top floor. All the best shopping is at the bottom of the steps, and sights such as the Colosseum and Trevi Fountain are within an easy walking distance.
I rated the Hassler as excellent as I cannot find fault in many things - even though it is very exepnsive, and staff are at first standoffish. They accommodated our room move with grace, the concierges made our bookings, and the door men courtious and polite. The appeal of this hotel is in it's "maturity" - it is not young and hip - it is seasoned and elegant.
P.S. Excellent coffee and gelato at Antica Roma just down the steps and to the left.
