Our first time in Italy, and Albergo del Senato was a last minute hurried decision after Expedia messed up our reservation (after sending us a "confirmed" notification! - we found out on our own from the hotel 2 DAYS BEFORE our departure that they had no such reservation at all! Make sure you check because Expedia's confirmation is NOT a guarantee!
Our first day arrival could not have gone worse...bad dishonest taxi driver from the Rome airport -BEWARE, they WILL cheat you! So count your money into their hand. He didn't even drop us off in front of the hotel, so we had to lug our suitcases around the cobblestoned alleys to find the Pantheon (several conflicting directions from Italians in the area), and FINALLY arrived at del Senato, dying in the heat and needing rest badly.
We mostly (hastily) chose it for its location, but I was misled by the rave reviews for this hotel... There was a dead cockroach by the couch in the lobby. No bellman at the door to help us with our luggage. The front desk guy Salvatore barely welcomed us and called for a porter but by then we had gotten our bags ourselves to the elevator. My exhausted heart fell when the elevator opened - it was TINY!! about the size of a phonebooth! The two of us couldn't even fit with our luggage (and we are petite girls), so we had to make 2 trips. We got off the elevator and dragged our luggage some more up a series of 2-3 steps before we finally got to our small room. BEWARE OF ROOM 112, the view of the balcony is horrible - after looking once we locked it, kept the curtains drawn and never opened them again. you step right out into a dark back alley in which anyone could just climb right up into your room. The walls are PAPER THIN! The door of the next room is literally 2 inches from your door and everytime someone opened and closed (slammed) their door it was loud as if they were trying to come into your room. We could hear EVERYTHING, including every word of our neighbor SINGING while we tried to rest and everyone passing in the hall. But the worst was over, the twin beds were firm and comfy. The bath was clean, although hot water came and went, the water pressure was good. Breakfast was great actually, and another front desk man was very courteous and helped us get a taxi cab when we left - we were so worried about the thin walls keeping us up for our week long stay, that we changed hotels the next day. Also, the rooftop terrace is overrated. I would say it has the feel of a B&B. If you're on a budget and only staying for a few days, it's ok if you don't mind hearing your neighbor.
