Hi

We are looking for a very Traditional good restaurant to Celebrate Joe's 54th birthday. We are staying in the Apartment in Rome Via dei Farnesi - Campo dei Fiori. We would like a fun place with good food and wine. We would appreciate advice and recomendations.

Thanks ...

Joe and Sheryl

Hello,

A really nice place is "Gusto" over by the Ara Pacis. Lots of authentic food and is mostly frequented by locals.

Hey Sheryl, for big fun try...

PANCRAZIO: Piazza del Biscione 92, near the Campo, tel: 06.686.1246, Closed Wednesdays.

Get a table in the basement... are you ready for the copy & paste quote??

"Located just off the Campo de Fiori, towards San Andrea Di Valle. A good basic meat and seafood restaurant in the Centro. While the atmosphere is grotto-like, the particular fascination of this restaurant is that it built directly on top of the Theater of Pompey where Julius Ceasar was assasinated. Go downstairs to use the restrooms and see some of the ruins of the theater, in fact if you can dine downstairs, all the better, although sitting in the Piazza, you get to people watch as you eat!... Expensive."

or...

La Cisterna: Via della Cisterna 13, In Trastevere, tel. 06-5812543, Mon-Sat 7pm-1:30am

"If you like traditional home cooking based on the best regional ingredients, head here. La Cisterna, named for an ancient well from imperial times discovered in the cellar, lies deep in the heart of Trastevere. For more than 75 years, it has been run by the wonderful Simmi family. In good weather, you can dine at sidewalk tables. From the ovens emerge Roman-style suckling lamb that's amazingly tender and seasoned with fresh herbs and virgin olive oil. The spicy rigatoni all'amatriciana is served with red-hot peppers, and the delectable papalini romana consists of wide noodles flavored with prosciutto, cheese, and eggs. The shrimp is perfectly grilled, and an array of fresh fish includes flaky sea bass baked with fresh herbs."

I've eaten at both these places and they were fun (we had a fun waiter too) but, wherever you go... have a GREAT time in Rome (and sing happy Birthday to Joe, okay?)

On my birthday I would go to Roscioli, on Via dei Giubbonari, just off campo. Great food (voted best carbonara in Rome by Gambero rosso) and great wines for very relaxed prices. Not a simple trattoria, bit more upscale and modern but just great.

We enjoy La Carbonara in the Campo di Fiori. Traditional food, yuumy antipasto bar and a fun location on the square.
