We loved Rome despite some rainy weather. The Vatican musuems are wonderful, but would strongly suggest a tour. It is so large and so much to see unless you have weeks to tour having a guide is wonderful. They provide you with the highlights and numerous interesting facts. I have been to Rome three times and on each visit have included a stop at the Vatican and its Museums. The reason is simply that the Vatican Museums contain some of the most complete collections of art and antiquities in the world.
