After buying our tickets at the Palatine, we walked to the Colosseum, where we breezed past the long right-hand line for tickets, into the much shorter left-hand security line, for “tours”, “prepurchased tickets”, and “ticket holders” (that was us-- thanks, Rick Steves!). The Colosseum was fascinating, definitely a must-see. The exterior was in some ways more interesting than the interior.... more

The last time I was in Rome (May 2005) one of the additional sights "not to be missed" was the modern day Gladiators, beautifully dressed and equipped and ever ready to pose with visitors for the requisite fee. more

Join one of the tour groups outside for 10 euro. This place was every bit as incredible as I thought it would be. more

The Colosseum, home of the galdiators and the classic image of Rome. If you're spending any time in Rome at all you have to see it. One of the ironies though is that it almost looks better and more impressive from the outside. Spend some time just taking it all in before you go inside for a look - you... more

You don't come to Rome and not visit the Colosseum, so my best advice is to start your day with it - be there when it opens to avoid lines that can take over an hour (and there are two sets of lines - first you go through the metal detector / security, and then you wait in line to... more

A truly magnificent place to visit. All of the old Roman ruins are a short walk away and Colosseum subway stop drops you right out into this magnificent area. Come during the day to enjoy the architecture and history but come back at night to see how magnificent the area is when it's illuminated. more

An amazing sight sure to be on everyone's Roma itinerary. We bought our tickets at Palatine Hill to avoid the line, and walked right in. The stairs are steep, but it's really great to walk through something this old and historic. The ticket price includes adjacent Palatine Hill (which then leads right into the Forum area) so don't miss that,... more

I don't usually like to take a tour, but the amount of time we saved on line to get in was priceless. It's deftinitly worth going inside of the Coloseum to see the ruins. You can picture all of those classic scenes from history taking place in here. It's truly a great place to walk around. But as expected, the... more
